Whatever word you choose to use, whether it is “firearm,” “gun,” “weapon,” “armament,” “pistol,” or “rifle,” you are referring to an INANIMATE TOOL! And like any other tool, firearms require proper training to be used correctly. If you dislike firearms, this book is NOT for you as it, and its contents, strongly support firearm-gun-weapon-armament-rifle-pistol enthusiasts and the Second Amendment of The United States Constitution.

Ed McGivern lived from 1874 to 1957 and was from Lewistown, Montana. He is a world renowned shooter. He owns a Guinness world record for five shots into a target smaller than a half-dollar in under a half a second. Ed also was a supporter of long distance shooting with the 357 revolver at ranges up to 600 yards. My Son and I have practiced at the 100 range with 1911’s and have had good luck. It is more like lobbing than target practice. I could not even imagine hitting a target at 600 yards with a 357 magnum pistol.

I am a 1911 fan and for many years have carried semi-automatics rather than revolvers. After many years, I finally looked at revolvers for backups and primary carry when a smaller frame is required for discretion. I have settled on several models like the Taurus 357 snub nose, or the Smith and Wesson Airweight .38. I have 3 or 4 great holsters that allow for very discreet carry. If you are going to carry a gun, we believe that you must practice with the handgun while drawing from the holster, purse, or method of carry.

I was looking for training materials and found Ed McGiverns book.
There are good teaching items in the book for any CCW instructor looking for some tips to teach their students, and there is a lot of information for the general gun enthusiast. Ask your local instructor for his opinion and even get him or her on the range to help show you the differences.

Chris Bird has written The Concealed Handgun Manual. I bought this book years ago and enjoyed reading this book. It was a great guide for any person new to carrying a concealed weapon.

Chris has put together a group of 14 stories that describe how ordinary citizens managed to defend themselves in the face of life-threatening circumstances. In our concealed carry classes our evaluations and feedback are showing that the most requested item are real world scenarios.

Many authors have talked about several steps that people need to take in order to increase their chances of surviving during a violent encounter. The first is being “Situationally Aware” and the second is to have a plan. “Situationally Aware” is being able to watch your environment for warning signs of trouble and be ready to react before it is too late. The second is to have a plan. As you go through life every situation is different and having a plan in each stage of your day.

This book helps you think about situations and make a plan before disaster strikes. The situations that are covered include police picking up guns in a natural disaster to women alone under attack.

During Hurricane Katrina the police illegally picked up the guns from legal home owners. This has been documented that Mayor Ray Negain ordered the legally owned firearms picked up. This is first story that I had read about the Katrina disaster that described that aftermath of thugs and looters. The law abiding citizens that banded together and kept their firearms were able to defend their neighborhoods. One the story’s main characters named Vinnie was a gun control supporter until this happened. He grew closer to his neighbors and exercised is God given right to defend himself. The gangs tried to take over and the citizens that banded together as Chris describes were not vigilantes but rather home owners taking care of their lives and property. I would take it one step farther and say that they were not vigilantes, but formed their own “Neighborhood Militia”. This “Neighborhood Militia” would be a great idea for the states to implement before the next disaster. Organize and TRAIN local groups of home owners to help defend the neighborhood until help can arrive.

Another story describes in great detail of a young woman who was home alone due to a migraine headache. She is awakened by a man at the door that is being very loud and rude. She decides to ignore him, only to hear him at the back door trying to get in. She calls 911 and pulls her .357 out of the safe. The 911 operator stays on the line and talks her through the entire ordeal. The bad guy gets in the house and into her bed room. The confrontation is dramatic and she does not shoot him but stands up to him with her gun and tells him to get out of the house. If she did not have the gun and the additional support of the 911 operator she may not be alive to tell the story. This is a great learning tool for firearm and defense instructors to use for talking points in a class.

The book would be worth the price if CCW and Defense instructors only used these two stories out of the 14 as learning tools for their classes.

What we all can take away from Chris’s hard work and great detail is that the police are one of our greatest assets, but it is the first 10 minutes that is the most critical before the police arrive. The other key take away from these two stories is to be prepared, and have a plan. Get a neighborhood defense plan together to help everyone in the neighborhood. Vinnie now is a gun rights supporter and knows his neighbors because his life just may depend on them. If you’re a regular citizen, get the book and talk about the different scenarios with your family to have a plan. If you’re a CCW Instructor or Defense Instructor, get the book to talk about these issues in your class. These learning points may just save some of your student’s lives.

Click on the book for the link.

Before we can talk about the book “An Inconvenient Book” we need to step back and take a short look at Glenn Beck. He is a self-proclaimed entertainer that is working on a news channel. While I have not totally gulped the “Glenn Cool Aid” or simply stated, I do not believe everything he publishes, but he has a lot more points that people need to take seriously.

The Glenn Beck show just finished the “Perfect Day” series in which they talk about the evidence that showing where some of our schools may face attacks from the Islamic Terrorists striving to take the United States down. Quite frankly, I am surprised more people in the country have not taken up Glenn’s warnings and started doing something about the threat. Our kids are our future, and it seems like we do not even care.

As for the book “An Inconvenient Book” it is one of the best sources of evidence to support the distribution of Ritalin to adults. The book is also probably one of the best sources or reference material on Global Warming, Marriage, Porn, The UN, Illegal Immigration, Media Bias, America’s Oil Dependence and other important topics. Glenn’s humor and facts run through this book and will make you laugh while getting your blood ready to boil. This book should be read and then put on your desk for reference when talking to folks that have their head in the sand.

We as a family took turns reading the book around the living room over the Thanksgiving holiday. Not only did have a great time, we also were able to use the book as conversation starters. We actually turned the TV down and talked more about the issues discussed in the book.

As I stated above, I do not always drink the “Glenn Beck Cool Aid” but he has confused me in the chapter talking about Radical Islam. Glenn states on page 38 that he has read the Koran “and can tell you that I unequivocally believe that Islam is a religion of peace. The overwhelming majority of Muslims are good, peace-loving people.” On its own this statement is positive, but I also have read the Qur’an and cannot understand his statement. The rest of the chapter in Glenn’s book supports the totally opposite of his statement. He goes on to explain that there is a plan for Islamists to over throw the United States or not be “assimilated into another culture. This is how he states it will work “(1) Concentrate yourselves in large numbers within the community; (2) set up schools and mosques; and (3) avoid being ruled by the majority”.

With Glenn being a supporter of the 2nd Amendment and a NRA member, he has talked about the rights of people to defend themselves. He is also very clear about his views on Child Molesters and the UN. We agree with his views on both. His solutions on Child Molesters of zero tolerance are right on line. We have to break the cycle of those harming children. Now Stu Burguiere who is one of the writers and works with Glenn on the radio show had one of the best ideas. On page 185 there is a cartoon of how to deal with a child molester “According to Stu”. It is very politically incorrect and has a lot of merit.

The bottom line. Glenn Beck may be an entertainer, but he is on a mission. This book has some merit and should be read with an open mind, as you will need it with all of the topics covered.

Lt. Col. Robert "Buzz" Patterson takes the time to explain the complex problem with the left. He does not take any pot shots, but rather uses their own words to explain how they are using Hollywood, and the media to move their agenda along while having total disregard for our country. In the appendix he titles a list "Why we fight". The list has 55 terrorist attacks that have been going on for years. We as Americans have a very short memory and it is good to be reminded of the atrocities that terrorists have committed against the United States. Col. Patterson also does a good job talking about the popular culture’s contribution to the global war effort by blaming America and not the terrorists.

Clapp has taken the time to put down in paper what every person needs to consider before carrying a gun. The gun selection chapter is well written and can help guide the new gun owner through the selection process. This alone can save money and headaches. Many of our students, including myself, have bought one or more guns thinking they are the “perfect” carry gun. In the ballistics chapter one of the key phrases is “Remember, big holes, deep holes, properly located holes. “ This is explained by an early line in the book; “A hit with 9mm ball is better than a miss with a .45 jhp. Marksmanship still counts.”

At Carryconceal.net we try to help CCW permit holders think about being “Situationally Aware” of your surroundings and plan for possible scenarios before they happen. In this book the author even talks about what you may have learned from TV and what actually happens in the real world. Clapp states; “Leave the gun in the pack until the need to use it is obvious. Brandishing a gun without justification is a crime in most jurisdictions. “

This is one of the most comprehensive survival books we have reviewed. The U.S. Army has put together an excellent manual for survival skills, and attitude. The opening chapters talk about being prepared. The book discusses the use of survival kits and provides some lists. While the lists are not all inclusive, they do offer a good start. The book has great suggestions in almost every climate a person would find themselves trapped. This book offers an advantage over other books by covering weapons manufacturing, raft building, and team work in survival situations. The last part of the book also covers the requirements for defense against dirty bombs and radiation fall out.

While this does not directly fit in with CCW and shooting it does follow our philosophy at Carryconcealed.net in planning and preparation. Following some of the preparation ideas in this book could help bring any one home from the hunting, camping or a family outing.

Essential Guide to Handguns

Written by Stephen R. Rementer and Bruce Eimer, PHD.

This is a well-written book that covers the issues surrounding gun ownership from training to cleaning. One of the best parts of the book describes people who should not own guns. The list includes; people who lack the necessary intellectual capacity, patience, and people who think they know everything. Other parts that were very important to potential gun owners include discussions on training. Training should be evaluated for several different points. Is the training provided in an atmosphere of fun, and is the attitude of the instructors demonstrating genuine concern for the students rather than money issues.

The authors go into great detail on gun safety, and stress the importance of practicing with your firearm. This is a great reference tool for all shooters. I bought this at Amazon.com

A Comprehensive Guide to Using Firearms for self-defense

Merril Press Bellevue WA

While I have been a CCW Permit holder for years, I have been seeking information from the experts on the key issues surrounding CCW. The book "Armed Response by David Kenik" was a great source of information and should go on the top of the Must Read pile for anyone who is thinking of carrying a firearm for protection. David goes through the basics very well and also explains the important factors around Body Alarm Reaction. It is our subconscious taking over the body during an emergency. The explanations in the book are very well defined, and offer practice suggestions prior to being in a life and death scenarios.

I have always been a believer in knowing your surroundings so that you do not have to rely on the quick draw. After reading the book I understand that I am one of those that watch in a relaxed alert state, rather than the type that goes through life totally unprepared. The book helps explain how to become more prepared to defend your loved ones.

David covers the basics while covering other topics that both new and experienced shooters could benefit. I am planning on having this book available at all of my CCW classes for my students. I purchased this from Amazon.com and recommend it for everyone.

I have had the opportunity to talk with David and he is as genuine as his book. He is very excited about his new videos coming out and we will be reviewing them and providing information on them soon.

The information represented in the 478 page book covers everything a person would need to survive in the woods. It is complete with lists of provisions, shelter manufacturing, fishing, small and large game preparation, knots, and safe water preparation. This book covers information that is being lost every year by older generations. Most people could not survive with out the local market or convenience stores. Natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina taught us that we need to prepare for emergencies. You should think about the book as a guide book and reference point. Read the book and look through the lists of provisions, and then make your own adjustments. Take the time to prepare for disasters that may impact your local area, as we learned from other disasters it may take days and sometimes weeks before help can arrive.

As a Concealed Carry Instructor, I am always looking for new material to help teach my students. I was in Borders and found the book “The Handgun in Personal Defense” by R. K. Campbell. I was nosing through it and a few items caught my eye. So after purchasing I went home to read and see what Mr. Campbell had to say.

The book was written in 2005 and published by Merril Press in Bellevue, Washington. R.K. states in the introduction “If the right to bear arms and the human right to self defense is curtailed, we face the prospect of a different and difficult future.” Not only do I agree with Mr. Campbell, I believe that the day may come when this right may be challenged.

There are several things that caught my eye and made this book different from other CCW books. The first is the fact that the author took the time to list out the “Wound Potential” for different types of calibers when considering a handgun for personal defense. We contacted the publisher and was granted permission to use the data to help our readers. We looked at the different types of calibers and bullets used by R.K and came up with the following chart. There is no question that the .357 145 Silvertip and the .45 ACP Remington 185 gr JHP were the winners. Both had significant penetration and expansion upon impact. This combined ratio is the Wound Potential. The Chart is at the end of the review.

One of the other items that really struck home is the fact that the author stresses practice and taking cover. This book is about self defense and not how to be a vigilante. There are some great points on drills and drawing from the holster while taking cover. “The most efficient draw uses the least motion.”

This can be purchased at Barns & Noble for $15.00. For the person wanting to get the extra tidbit on self defense, this is worth the money. For the Instructor looking for a book for his students, this is a good one to start with.

When I find a great desk resource it is a real treasure. Frank Barns has put together one of the best desk reference tools that I have been able to find regarding rifle and handgun cartridges.

How many people take the time to understand why a handgun or rifle cartridge is invented? There are several classics like the .45 Automatic ACP. It was invented by John Browning in 1905 and placed into service by the United States Ordinance Dept. in 1911. The author points out that the .45 ACP is the most powerful handgun used by militaries today. It has been proven in combat with excellent stopping power. It has limited range because of its curved trajectory. We at Carryconcealed.net have been practicing for fun at the 100 yard range and found that using the .45 is more like “Lobbing” than target practice. We have to aim about one foot above the intended target.

The .45 Colt or commonly called the .45 Long Colt has seen a resurgence in the last 20 years with the increase in Cowboy Action Shooting. This coupled with companies making affordable replicas of the Colt Sixshooters has added a whole new chapter to this round. It was introduced in 1873 by Colt for the “Peacemaker” single-action revolver. It has been around for over 130 years. It is only surpassed with knockdown power by the 44 Magnum. Hornady, Sierra, Speer and other have stepped forward to fill the new demand for the .45 Long Colt demand.

Some of the other advantages to this book also provide clues to handguns that may be family heirlooms that may need some clarification. For example is the handgun pictured on the right. The serial number on the handgun matches the serial number on the cylinder. It has almost no markings, but is manufactured from a blacksmith style or individual manufacture type rather than the modern machine tools. It is a 45-70 chambered handgun and we were able to date this handgun in the 1870’s based upon the markings and the information in the Obsolete American Rifle Cartridges section. The practice of having a handgun chambered the same as your rifle was practiced in the west. It was practical as it allowed the frontier adventures to carry only one cartridge. The 45-70 was also used in the Sharps rifles. Many of us can recognize the gun from the movie “Quigley Down Under”.

If you are a CCW Instructor or just a gun historian, this is an excellent desk reference. I got mine from Borders for $29.99.

At Carryconcealed.net we are always looking for the best resources to learn new techniques to pass on to our students. We picked up Combat Handgunnery, 6th Edition by Massad Ayoob.

If you are a CCW instructor, this would be a great addition to your library, and if you are a regular citizen this has great inspiration on every CCW topic.

For the beginner the first few chapters go through the basic CCW handguns that are on the market. The author goes through the basics of the Semi-Auto and the Revolver. The tips that he goes through will help the beginner save money and look for the type of gun that will fit their personal style. This discussion also includes the micro handguns. Using them for back up as well as a primary concealed weapon is addressed. The real world approach to these questions can only be handled by someone that has been in the shooting community successfully for a long time.

In some of our other articles we talk about training with your weak or off hand just in case of an emergency or an injury. The author talks about not only practicing from your weak hand, but also from disadvantaged positions. There are tidbits all through the book regarding almost every scenario you can think of. I took notice of the parts that were also talking about preparing to stop the bleeding on a possible gunshot wound to the arm while remaining undercover and looking for a way out of the situation. This kind of forward thinking and preparation can help save your life, as well as your loved ones.

The tips on gun handling and trigger pull were dead on right. The extra pictures coupled with the good descriptions of where the finger needs to rest on the trigger are often talked about, but not always covered with good pictures and visuals. Many of our students will “Jerk “the trigger which pulls the shot down, but Ayoob covers this by further explaining that the finger placement on the trigger can also help extend the problem. By placing the pad of the trigger finger this will help the average shooter hit the desired target. He also talks about when a different trigger pull would be appropriate.

The drills, comments “Know Thy Weapon” and recommendations to practice with trainers and shooting programs all lend this book to be a standard for the shooting community.

Our hats are off to Massad Ayoob for putting this together. If you do not have a copy you can pick one up at Amazon.com, or Borders for $24.99
